Makkah and Madinah Weather in Winter (November to February)

The table shows long-term averages for each winter month from the WMO 1991–2020 climate normals for Makkah and for Madinah (World Meteorological Organization data, NOAA archive). They are averages, not a forecast: a cold night or a rainy day can be well away from them. Check the Saudi National Center for Meteorology a few days before you fly.

Makkah weather in December and January

Makkah stays warm. December averages 32.5°C by day and 20.7°C at night; January averages 30.9°C and 19.2°C. The afternoon sun is still strong, so many pilgrims do Tawaf and Sa'i after Maghrib or late at night, carry water and use an umbrella for shade.

Madinah weather in December and January

Madinah is about 6–7°C cooler than Makkah by day and sits higher above sea level. Average lows are 14.0°C in December and 12.1°C in January, and individual nights can be colder. The walk to Masjid an-Nabawi for Fajr is usually the coldest part of the whole trip, especially for elderly parents and children.

February and November

November is the warmest of the four months (Makkah 35.6°C by day). February warms up again and is the driest month, with almost no rain days on average. Ramadan 2027 is expected to begin around 8 February 2027 (Umm al-Qura calendar), so February trips quickly become Ramadan trips.

Rain in winter

Rain is not common, but winter is when most of it falls: Makkah averages 1.7 rain days in November, 1.3 in December and 1.8 in January. When it rains, the marble around the Haram gets slippery and low roads can flood. Wear shoes or sandals with grip outside the mosque, keep a small umbrella and follow the instructions of the Haram staff.

Is Winter Good for Umrah?

Is Winter a Good Time for Umrah?

For most Pakistani families, yes. Walking between the hotel and the Haram is easier, Tawaf and Sa'i in the open are more comfortable, and older pilgrims cope better than in the summer heat. See our guide to Umrah with elderly parents.

What to Wear

What to Wear for Umrah in Winter

Men in ihram

Take two ihram sets so one can dry. Ihram rules stay the same in winter: no stitched or fitted clothes such as a jacket or sweater, and the head stays uncovered. Many pilgrims add an extra unstitched sheet or shawl over the shoulders on cold mornings. Wear sandals that leave the ankle and the top of the foot uncovered. If you are unsure about anything, ask your group's scholar.

Women

Wear loose, modest clothes as usual, with a warmer layer under the abaya, such as a cardigan or a thermal top, plus warm socks and a shawl. A light, dark scarf works in both cities. See our women's Umrah guide.

Outside ihram (both cities)

From a Pakistani Winter

Leaving a Pakistani Winter for Saudi Weather

Most of our groups leave Islamabad, Lahore and other Punjab cities in fog and cold and land in a warm Jeddah. Dress in layers for the flight and keep one warm layer in your hand luggage for Madinah. Winter fog can delay flights from Punjab airports, so reach the airport early and keep WhatsApp on for group messages. For flight and rule news, see our Umrah travel updates.

When to Book

When to Book a Winter Umrah from Pakistan

Pakistan's school winter holidays usually fall in late December and early January. The 2026–27 holiday dates have not been announced yet, so check your school's notice before you book. Groups in that window fill first, so book early if your dates are fixed. Current prices: November 2026 groups from PKR 222,500 per person (Sharing); December 2026 groups from PKR 218,000 per person (Sharing), from our live booking data of 27 Oct 2026.

With Diyanat Travels

Winter Umrah with Diyanat Travels

Our Umrah packages are group departures with return flights, the Umrah visa, Makkah and Madinah hotels and transport, mostly from Islamabad. In winter a hotel close to the Haram helps, because you walk less in the cold Madinah mornings; see Umrah packages near the Haram. Frequently Asked Questions

Is it cold in Makkah in winter?

Not really. From December to February Makkah's long-term average highs are about 31–33°C and average lows about 19–21°C (WMO climate normals 1991–2020). Days are warm and evenings are pleasant, so most pilgrims only need a light layer at night.

How cold is Madinah in December and January?

Madinah is clearly cooler than Makkah. Its average low is about 14°C in December and about 12°C in January, with average highs of 24–26°C (WMO climate normals 1991–2020). Some nights are colder than the average, so the walk to Fajr is the coldest part of the trip.

Can men wear a jacket in ihram?

Men in ihram may not wear stitched or fitted clothes such as a jacket or sweater, and the head stays uncovered. Many pilgrims add an extra unstitched sheet or shawl over the shoulders for warmth. If you are unsure, ask your group's scholar before you travel.

What should women wear for Umrah in winter?

Loose, modest clothes as usual, with a warmer layer such as a cardigan under the abaya, warm socks and a shawl. Madinah evenings and early mornings need the extra layer more than Makkah.

Does it rain in Makkah in winter?

Sometimes. On long-term averages Makkah has about 1–2 rain days a month from November to January and almost none in February. When it rains, marble floors get slippery and roads can flood, so walk carefully and check the Saudi National Center for Meteorology forecast.

When should I go for a winter Umrah from Pakistan?

November and early December are usually calmer. Late December and early January match Pakistan's school winter holidays, so those groups fill early. Ramadan 2027 is expected to start around 8 February 2027 (Umm al-Qura calendar). Ramadan 2027 bookings are open; ask us on WhatsApp at 0330-3786333.

Sardiyon mein Umrah ke liye kya kapre le kar jayein?

Makkah mein din garam aur raat halki thandi hoti hai, lekin Madinah mein Fajr ke waqt kaafi sardi hoti hai. Garam shawl, moze aur halki jacket saath rakhein. Mard ihram mein silay hue kapre nahin pehen sakte; ek izafi chadar kandhon par le sakte hain.
